The White House said on Tuesday that the United States “will not be afraid to use economic and military power” to defend the so-called freedom of expression, in response to a question about Jair Bolsonaro’s trial in the Supreme Court.
The statement, made by spokesman Karoline Leavitt, provoked immediate reaction from Itamaraty, which in a statement condemned “the use of economic sanctions or threats to use Brazilian democracy and denounced attempts to” instrumentalize foreign governments to coerce national institutions. “
During the press conference in Washington, Leavitt was questioned by journalist Michael Shellenberger if the Trump government was considering adopting new measures against Brazil in the face of Bolsonaro’s likely conviction.

The spokesman replied that the president has already applied tariffs and sanctions to the country for this goal and stressed that “freedom of expression is the most important question of our time,” adding that Trump “is not afraid to use the economic power and military power of the United States to protect freedom of expression around the world.”
Despite the blunt discourse, Leavitt stated that “there are no new actions at this time to anticipate.”
Speech immediately repercussions on the social networks of US representation itself in Brazil. The embassy republished the video of the statement, but omitted the part where Leavitt mentions the use of military power. At the same time, he once again directed attacks on Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of Bolsonaro’s trial in the Supreme Court, stating that he and other “individuals whose authority abuses have undermined fundamental freedoms” will continue to be the subject of appropriate measures by Washington. The text released by the Embassy was a message republication of the Undersecretary of Public Diplomacy of the State Department, Darren Beattie, made a day earlier.
The threats occur in the context of the sanctions already underway and the possibility of new measures. Since July, Trump has imposed 50% rates on Brazilian products and has been studying additional overcrowding, such as punishment for Brazil for importing diesel from Russia – a policy similar to the one applied against India. Bolsonaro’s allies expect the United States to announce the revocation of visas after the former president’s conviction. At the same time, rhetoric against Brazil adds to direct pressures on the Armed Forces and the SERCO to STF ministers, reinforcing the climbing of the US offensive amid the judicial process against the core of the 2022 coup.
The White House said on Tuesday that the United States “will not be afraid to use economic and military power” against Brazil, in a statement that exposes the imperialist climb of Washington and the attempt to directly interfere with Jair Bolsonaro’s trial.
Itamaraty’s reaction was immediate and in a statement, the chancel condemned “the use of economic sanctions or threats to use of force” and stated that the powers of the Republic will not be intimidated by any attack on national sovereignty.
Spokesman Karoline Leavitt, answering a question by journalist Michael Shellenberger, said Donald Trump has already applied tariffs and sanctions to Brazil on the grounds of “protecting freedom of expression” and warned that the president “is not afraid to use economic power and military power of the United States” for this purpose.

The defendant’s son, still deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, tried to amplify the White House threats. Instead of defending the country’s sovereignty, he celebrated Trump’s willingness to use the United States War Machine, concerned only with freeing himself and the father of jail.
The stance echoes the logic of the far right far, which combines itself with foreign powers to attack national institutions.
The reaction came from the PT leader in the House, Lindbergh Farias (RJ), who filed a request for pre -trial detention and blocking of parliamentary funds from Eduardo.
The document maintains that the deputy acts as an articulator of the international offensive, extrapolating the field of political opinion and configuring direct pressure against justice.
For Lindbergh, Eduardo’s cooperation with Trump represents “foreign interference against national sovereignty and the independence of justice”, justifying harder measures to safeguard public order and law enforcement.

US embassy again threatens national sovereignty
Shortly after the press conference in Washington, the US embassy in Brasilia tried to amplify the statement. He published the video of Leavitt’s speech, but edited the message: did not mention the military threat, preferring to insist on the attacks on Alexandre de Moraes.
The diplomatic representation accused the STF minister and “other individuals” of undermining fundamental freedoms and ensured that he will continue to adopt “appropriate measures” against them.
Washington threats are not just in speech. Since July, Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian products and now evaluates additional overfins because Brazil imports diesel from Russia, in a punitive logic that has already been applied against India.
Among the pockets, the expectation is that, after the former president’s conviction, the US will advance with new sanctions, including revocation of visas.
Meanwhile, the official rhetoric of the White House serves as a fuel to press the Brazilian Armed Forces and intimidate ministers of the Supreme, revealing the degree of hostility of US foreign policy amid the judicial process that dismantles the core of 2022.
