The President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), signed on Friday (September 4, 2026) two executive orders aimed at the country’s livestock sector. The objective is to contain record beef prices at retail, rebuild the national herd and increase competition in the processing industry.
The package ranges from reviewing the environmental protection status of predators, such as the gray wolf, to financing small and medium-sized regional slaughterhouses. The orders also determine an analysis of the labeling rules for the meat’s country of origin.
Because of prolonged droughts and wildfires, the US cattle herd has fallen to its lowest level in 75 years. The shortage of animals has raised the price of the product on supermarket shelves to the highest levels in history.
One of the main demands of producers met by the acts is the fight against attacks by wild animals. The Department of the Interior will evaluate the removal or reclassification of the gray wolf and the Mexican wolf from the list of endangered species. The measure seeks to simplify authorizations for the lethal slaughter of these predators and expand compensation to livestock farmers for dead animals.
The North American government also announced financial contributions to decentralize meat processing, currently dominated by a few companies. US$500 million was allocated to the SPUR program, focused on small slaughterhouses, in addition to US$80 million to subsidize inspections and operational costs in smaller establishments.
The US also wants to move forward in demanding transparency from consumers. The US Department of Agriculture will review the regulations so that the origin of the product is reported more clearly. The decisions seek to calm the sector’s dissatisfaction. The previous week, the Trump administration had temporarily increased the beef import quota by 300,000 tons with reduced tariffs to try to curb inflation.
