The President of the States, Donald Trump, fired, last Thursday (9), three members of the Electoral Assistance Commission (EAC), an independent federal body that serves to assist authorities who organize elections in the country. Those dismissed were the last members of the board.

The EAC should have four members, but it is empty just a few months before the mid-term elections, scheduled for next November, and which will renew part of the US Congress.

Of the three members fired, Christy McCormick, nominated by the Republican Party, resigned. According to the agency ReutersDemocratic Party nominees Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland were fired via email.

What is the EAC

The EAC was created by the US Congress in 2002, functioning as a national support center for electoral administration. The body certifies voting systems used by states and maintains the national mail-in voter registration form.

Under American law, the four members must be appointed by the president, but must be approved by the Senate. The positions must be divided between members of the Republican and Democratic parties.

Now, the EAC will have to regain members to be able to make decisions. According to the rules, the approval of at least three members is required for any decision. The White House has not yet commented on possible nominations for the commission.

According to information from Reutersa US government official confirmed that the Republican administration has been working with local agencies and authorities to protect the November elections against fraud. On several occasions, Trump has already indicated that there was fraud in the 2020 presidential election, when he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. The Republican never proved the accusation.
