Sérgio Tavares released his police investigation to show that the PF “lied” about his visa in order to interrogate him

Portuguese journalist Sérgio Tavares, detained at Guarulhos airport on Sunday (25.Feb.2024), said that the Federal Police tried to arrest him for “crime of opinion”. He came to Brazil to record images of the act of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), which took place on the same day. Tavares released the full text (PNG – 2 MB) of his investigation on his social networks this Thursday (Feb 29), so that, according to him, “to test” that the Federal Police’s action was illegal.

“I was not interrogated because of a visa, but rather to try to arrest, for ‘crimes of opinion’, a European citizen. At no point was I questioned about the visa, I was, rather, questioned about all my steps, all my opinions about the political situation in Brazil, and this is not standard procedure”, says in video.

The journalist was taken to the airport police station to provide clarification because he did not have a professional visa. According to the corporation, he went through a “standard procedure”, which lasted about 4 hours.

The PF also said that Sérgio was asked about comments made on his social media profiles about Brazilian democracy. The agency states that the procedure is standard and is followed at all airports around the world.

All I was asked were questions about politics: January 8, dictatorship of the judiciary, Flávio Dino, Alexandre de Moraes, etc. I have documentary proof of this lie to forget this political persecution that I was the target of”, declared the journalist in the video this Thursday (Feb 29).

“Why do you care so much about a European citizen addressing these issues? And why did they lie? Why did they detain me? Why did they interrogate me? Why do I bother you so much?” continued.
