Israeli soldiers killed a 15-year-old boy south of the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank on Tuesday. The information was provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. According to the organ, the military opened fire on the boy and prevented a medical team from providing help.

Mohammad Farid al-Za’areer lived in the village of Eshtmou. His death raises the survey carried out by the French News Agency-AFP, which indicates that at least 204 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli military in 2023. Of these, 36 were children.

According to Israeli forces, Mohammad tried to intimidate soldiers with a knife, when he was approached at a bus stop. When threatened, the military reacted by killing the teenager.

The growing number of Palestinians makes 2023 one of the bloodiest years in the region. For Arturo Hartmann, PhD in International Relations and member of the International Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (CIEAI) at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), this increase takes place at the same time that the extreme right occupies power in Israel.

However, points out Hartmann, there is a structural violence and this is the basis of the problem, which he calls the structure of the Zionist colonial project. Zionism is a nationalist political movement that advocates a sovereign Jewish state over the lands of Palestine. For the professor, a more conservative Israel strengthens this movement.

“When you have an offensive, an acceleration, more violent modes. This culminates in more violence. On one side, you have the Israeli colonial offensive. In contrast, Palestinian defense and resistance. The result of this is more deaths”, says Hartmann.
