To make your Steak à Role, use the ingredients below and follow the step-by-step preparation instructions.

Ingredients

  • Thin steaks of your choice (typically beef is used, such as rump or sirloin)

  • Bacon slices

  • Carrot cut into thin sticks

  • Onion cut into strips

  • Chopped garlic

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Oil or olive oil for sautéing

  • Meat broth (can be homemade or in cubes dissolved in hot water)

  • Dry red wine (optional)

  • Toothpicks

Directions

  • Season the steaks with salt and pepper to taste.
  • On each steak, place a slice of bacon, some carrot sticks and onion strips.
  • Wrap the steak with the filling ingredients, securing it with a toothpick so it doesn’t fall apart.
  • In a large frying pan, heat a little oil or olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the rolled steaks and brown them on all sides.
  • This will seal the meat and add flavor.
  • Add the chopped garlic to the pan and sauté for a few minutes until aromatic.
  • If desired, add a splash of dry red wine to the pan to deglaze.
  • This will add more flavor to the sauce.
  • Let the wine reduce a little.
  • Add enough beef broth to the pan to half cover the steaks.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pan and simmer for about 20-30 minutes, or until the meat is tender and the sauce has reduced and thickened.
  • Check the seasoning and adjust if necessary.
  • When the steaks are ready, remove the toothpicks.
  • Serve the steaks on a roll with the sauce on top, accompanied by rice, mashed potatoes or cooked vegetables, depending on your preference.
