The primaries of the Democratic Party for New York City Hall reserved a pleasant surprise. Voters opted for 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for the most socialist and progressive wing of the party on Tuesday (24).
When they chose a deputy of the New York State Assembly, who was left out was the former governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo, 67, a figure representing the establishment from the acronym and was supported by Hillary and Bill Clinton. The investigation continues, but the victory has already been defined: with 95% of the votes accounted for, the deputy has 43% against 36% of the former governor.
Cuomo now evaluates to compete as independent, just as he has decided to do so the current mayor, Eric Adams, 64, who seeks reelection after leaving the Democratic Party. The current agent had his government worn out of allegations of corruption, later filed by the court.
Favorite
In a cosmopolitan and multicultural city, the Democratic candidate is always considered the favorite in the dispute against Republicans. Thus, by beating primaries, Mamdani presents himself as a young figure capable of blocking the old party’s old faces, while it can be a local counterpoint to Donald Trump’s policies.
In this sense, Mamdani’s autobiography already says a lot. The leftist deputy is Muslim and son of Indian parents. Born in Uganda, East Africa (east), he moved to the US with his family at age seven.
These credentials are already enough to show that Mamdani symbolizes everything that the US president has attacked. But to complete its political action is also opposite to Trump. The mayoral candidate guided his campaign in urgent matters of the day to day of the humblest population, composed largely by immigrants who suffer from high rents and the high cost of living in the city.

Thus, the District of Queens deputy preaches measures to hold the price of housing, zero bus fare, free day care centers, subsidized markets for cheaper food, among other proposals. To account for these policies, it intends to expand taxes on the richest.
The measure is supported by the young and progressive electorate – raptured by a strong online campaign – who is frustrated by increasing inequality by not being able to accompany the cost of living in the city, known to have the largest concentration of millionaires in the world.
In addition, the Democrat has been an important voice in denouncing genocide in Gaza, committed by Israel under the consent of Trump.

Support and Challenges
Senator Bernie Sanders and Deputy Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, prominent politicians of the leftist wing of the Democrats, congratulated Mamdani for victory. However, there is resistance to his name internally, with accusations of party leaders because he is inexperienced and too socialist, indicating that he could suffer a sabotage process, already started with the independent candidacy of Adams and the possibility that it will happen to Cuomo, bringing part of the Democrat’s electorate to himself.
In turn, Zohran Mamdani, the socialist democrat, described as a “new political star” by the newspaper The New York Timesused a speech by Nelson Mandela to celebrate the position won in the election that takes place in November: “In Nelson Mandela’s words: always seems impossible until it is done. My friends is done. And you were the ones who did. I am honored to be your nominee for mayor of New York City.”
