According to information from the Russian space agency, the objective would be to deliver the facilities by 2035.

Head of the Russian space agency (Roscosmos), Yuri Borisov said on Monday (March 4, 2024) that the country is interested in collaborating with China to jointly create a lunar space program, which would include the construction of a nuclear power plant on the moon.

The project is being considered by Roscosmos in partnership with the China National Space Administration (CMSA), which has been cooperating in the construction of a lunar research base since June 2021. The information is from the German news agency DW.

Moscow says it believes that Russian dominance in nuclear energy can contribute to the project, to be implemented from 2033 to 2035. Borisov also stated that solar panels may not be enough to provide the energy needed for possible settlements on the Moon, as a lunar night equivalent to 14 days on Earth.

In 2022, the United States expressed concern about nuclear weapons in space, which was denied by Russia. In the same year, NASA said it was working together with the US Department of Energy on a nuclear energy system, which could be developed in up to 8 years.
