Pontiff defends diplomacy in the face of escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine in a speech in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, this Sunday (July 12)

Pope Leo 14 once again defended this Sunday (12.Jul.2026) dialogue and diplomacy as ways to contain armed conflicts in the world. During the Angelus prayer in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, the pontiff called for efforts to “disperse the winds of war” and preserve hope for a peaceful solution. The information is from Vatican News.

In his message, the leader of the Catholic Church also called on the faithful to pray for populations affected by wars and stated that the international community must prioritize negotiations and the protection of life in the face of escalating conflicts.

The statement was made during the worsening of tensions in the Middle East. The United States and Iran returned to exchange attacks after Tehran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, raising the risk of an expansion of the conflict in the region.

Pope Leo 14 also made reference to the war in Ukraine. In recent weeks, Russia has intensified bombings against Kiev, while Ukrainian forces have increased attacks on Russian logistics infrastructure in occupied areas in the south of the country.

The pontiff has been in Castel Gandolfo since July 5 for a period of rest, resuming the tradition of summer vacations for popes, which had been interrupted during Francis’ pontificate.
