Thousands of young ultranationalist Jews marched on Monday (26) through the alleys of the Muslim neighborhood of the old town of Jerusalem, singing shouts of “death to the Arabs” and “that their village burns” during the celebration of the so-called Jerusalem Day.
The march, which receives funding from the City Hall of Jerusalem and Police Protection, was attended by parliamentarians from Benjamin Netanyahu base, members of the Israeli government and the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, who spoke asking for death to Palestinians, the end of humanitarian aid to Gaza and said that “our enemies deserve only one head bullet.”
The event marks the anniversary of the occupation of the eastern part of the city by Israel in 1967, after the six day war.
In recent years, the march has been dominated by sectors of the far right religious, settlers and students of Yeshivot (Jewish religious schools), often marked by provocations and violence against Palestinians.
Arab merchants closed the stores early, and pacifist groups tried to protect residents along the way.
From a stage mounted in front of Jerusalem’s great synagogue, Ben Gvir was greeted by religious teenagers who handed him flags from the far -right Otzma Yehudit party and stickers with phrases like “Gaza is ours forever.”
The minister raised a sticker with the face of a dead Israeli soldier and stated, “Heroes and martyrs, thanks to them we are winning.”
“But this victory needs to go further … Let’s go to Gaza and triumph!” He shouted, tearing off the crowd.
He then directly attacked Israeli Prime Minister Benajmin Netanyahu for allowing the entry of humanitarian aid in Gaza in recent days.
“I say to the Prime Minister, dear Prime Minister, we should not give them humanitarian aid, we should not give fuel … Our enemies deserve only a bullet in the head,” he said.
When young people started shouting “death to the Arabs,” Ben Gvir redirected them to say “death to the terrorists,” but kept their tone.
“I don’t hate Arabs, but I hate terrorists. I want a death penalty for terrorists, and with God’s help, let’s win,” he said.
Unrwa invaded by Netanyahu base deputy
During the march, a group led by Israel Beytenu party Malinovsky, also from the far right, broke into the UNRWA (UN Agency for Palestinian refugees) complex in East Jerusalem.
According to the agency coordinator in the West Bank, Roland Friedrich, about twelve Israelis climbed the main gate against Israeli police inertia.
Unrwa was banned by Israel in 2024 under false accusations of involvement with Hamas on October 7.
Although the complex has been empty since January for safety reasons, the UN says it has not abandoned it and that the site is protected by international law.
Ben Gvir invades al-aqsa and stimulates prayers in the sacred Muslim site
Hours before the march, Ben Gvir visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque Complex, known to Muslims as Al-Hiram Al-Sharif (the noble Sanctuary), accompanied by parliamentarians and rabbis.
It is the third most sacred site of Islam, where the summit of the rock is also located. Jews refer to the place as a temple mount.
Since 1967, a status quo has been in place that only Muslims can pray at the site, even though Jews can visit it. This policy is managed by the Jerusalem WAQF, an Islamic institution subordinate to Jordan, which manages the complex.
Ben Gvir’s visit was denounced by WAQF as a provocation and violation of diplomatic understanding. “Today, thank God, it is possible to pray on the Mount of the Temple,” said the minister, in a statement reproduced by his office.
Institutionalized violence in occupied Jerusalem
During the march, young Jews verbally attacked Palestinians, merchants and activists. In a video recorded by Al Jazeera, a Palestinian woman responds to a protester who tells her to leave: “You leave.”
According to reports, police celebrated the presence of some protesters, exchanging hugs with them.
Representative and former general Yair Golan, president of the Democratic Party, commented on the events: “This shocking violence is the result of an incitador and racist anti-joint government. This is not our Judaism. This is not the Zionism we believe.”
The march is inserted in a context of racial violence and institutionalized colonization. Israel considers Jerusalem its “eternal and indivisible” capital, although the international community does not recognize the annexation of the eastern part of the city. Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
