The candidate of the Citizen Revolution, Luisa González, announced on Sunday night (13) that will not recognize the results of the second round of presidential elections in Ecuador. According to data from the National Electoral Council (CNE), with more than 92% of the ballot boxes, Daniel Noboa was reelected with 55.7% of the votes, against 44.3% of González. The candidate states that there was fraud and will file a formal request for recount.
“In the name of the people we represent, we do not recognize the results presented by the CNE. We will ask for the recount of the votes and to open the polls,” said González during a statement in Quito.
She also stated that the campaign was marked by abuses of power committed by Noboa, who did not graduate from office, used state resources for his own benefit and decreed “state of exception” on the eve of the vote.
“We have witnessed the abuse of power. First, never asked for license. Second, he used the CNE and the ECA authorities to do what they wanted to run over the rights of Ecuadorians, democracy, and then states of exception. Why? For what? To ensure probably the most grotesque electoral fraud before which we are witnessing Ecuadorians,” he protested.
González held the current president responsible for creating an intimidation environment and denounced what he called “the most grotesque electoral fraud in the history of Ecuador”.
Among the irregularities mentioned are the publication of minutes without compulsory signatures in the voting joints, last -minute changes in voting sites and the suspension of the vote to Ecuadorians resident in Venezuela.
Former presidential candidate and leader of the Citizen Revolution, Andrés Arauz, released images of six minutes without signature and stated that all favor noboa, in disagreement with Article 127 of the Code of Democracy.
Political and popular organizations, such as the Socialist Party, Pachakutik, Democratic Center, and the Social Celac platform, added to criticism and charged a complete audit of the process.
In a statement, Celac Social denounced “a planned undemocratic operation months in advance”, which included “arbitrary use of state resources”, exclusion from international observers and the imposition of collecting touch in 22 cities. The entity made a call to “peaceful popular mobilization” and international pressure for a recount.
The National Electoral Council replied that a request for recount can be made, provided it meets the legal requirements. CNE President Diana Atamaint stated that the tendency is irreversible, but that the law provides for review mechanisms upon formal and substantiated request.
Daniel Noboa did not directly comment on González’s statements, but celebrated the victory as “legitimate” and said there is no doubt about the result. The international press records that the dispute was marked by climate of tension, censorship and growing militarization.
The opposition promises to remain mobilized to ensure what it considers to be “the sovereign will of the Ecuadorian people.” The dispute over the validity of the electoral result may have legal and political developments in the coming days.
