Tension in the Middle East has reached a new level following cross statements between Iran’s supreme leader and the White House. In a post on social media this Saturday (11), Ayatollah Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, who took office after the assassination of his father, Ali Khamenei, on February 28, stated that revenge for the death of his predecessor is a demand of the Iranian people that will be carried out.
“We promise to exact revenge for their pure blood and for the blood of all the martyrs of these two wars, their criminal and dishonored killers. This revenge is the mandate of our nation and will definitely be carried out”, declared Mojtaba after the funeral services in the city of Mashhad, where crowds protested chanting slogans against Washington.
On the other hand, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, used his social network, Truth Social, to reiterate threats against Iranian territory in the early hours of Saturday. The American leader said he had ordered the Armed Forces to be on standby for a massive attack.
“A thousand missiles are locked and loaded, aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands more to be launched immediately after,” the Republican wrote. Trump further declared that the military plan envisages “completely decimating and destroying all areas of Iran” for a period of up to a year.
At the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, held on July 7 and 8, in Turkey, Trump once again attacked Iran. “They want to eliminate the leader of the USA, me. I’m on all their lists”, said the president on board the presidential plane Air Force One.
The trigger for the new crisis would have been the sharing of supposed intelligence reports provided by the Israeli government to the USA, detailing the alleged assassination plan against Trump, as revealed by the newspaper Wall Street Journal. So far, Iran’s mission to the United Nations (UN) and the Israeli embassy in Washington have not officially commented on the reports.
The intensification of speeches occurs amid military clashes in the Strait of Hormuz region, through which much of the world’s oil passes. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held telephone conversations to coordinate next steps in the Persian Gulf.
Iran holds talks on Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, arrived this Saturday in Muscat, capital of Oman, for meetings with Omani authorities on the implementation of the memorandum of understanding to end the war, in addition to discussing security in the Strait of Hormuz and developments in the regional crisis.
According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, the visit continues the consultations held between Tehran and Oman in recent months regarding navigation in the region.
At the same time, an Iranian technical delegation participated in meetings in Doha, Qatar, to advance the implementation of the agreement mediated by Pakistan, with the participation of Qatari and Pakistani representatives.
In the Qatari capital, President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, also met with local authorities. In a post on social media, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran “has kept its word” in the memorandum of understanding and accused Washington of breaching the agreement. “There can only be mutual compliance,” he wrote, referring to the Iranian government’s criticism of the United States’ actions.
