Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that there was no provision in the text of the memorandum that established a 60-day deadline, explaining that the document only provided for negotiations on the nuclear issue within that period.

“We did not start any negotiations and the US violated the understanding from the beginning; therefore, the issue of 60 days is not relevant,” he said at a press conference this Monday (17).

Baqaei emphasized that Iran will make decisions based on its national interests and assessments, rather than being compelled by a deadline. “Iran is not a country that adjusts its policies under pressure and deadlines,” he said.

The spokesman added that the Iranian military is closely monitoring developments, and that strengthening relations with countries in the region is part of Iran’s ongoing activities.

After Washington claimed that it had changed its priorities towards Tehran, Baqaei said that such allegations demonstrate continued confusion and confirmed that the war of aggression against Iran has no basis other than to serve the ambitions of “a regime in our region”.

He said the US initially cited the need to confront an imminent threat from Iran as its reason for starting the war, but the Pentagon itself rejected the claim and said there was no such threat. “They have become embroiled in an impasse and, to justify their failures, they are forced to change their objectives,” said Baqaei.

He added that Washington’s concern has now turned to the Strait of Hormuz, which he said was open before the aggression.

“Under these circumstances, the best thing for the US is to withdraw as quickly as possible, before becoming more deeply involved,” Baqaei said, adding that acknowledging a mistake could pave the way for a correct decision, although he expressed doubts that US officials had “such courage”.
