The President of the United States, Donald Trump, who is experiencing a crisis of internal credibility on the eve of the mid-term elections, promised that he would give US$5,000 to each citizen if the Republican party wins a majority of votes.
In an interview with BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de FatoGilberto Maringoni, professor of International Relations at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), assesses that the evident attempt to buy votes is an argument for the Brazilian right to stop defending the USA as the largest democracy in the world and an example of zeal for individual freedoms. “Trump takes a physiological measure, a delayed measure, which in Brazil is a joke when people say things like this, that the candidate for government promises gifts to his electorate”, he criticizes.
Maringoni considers it scandalous for Trump, as president, to adopt a practice of this type. “He is using the structure of the State, that is, he is speaking as the president of the United States. It is not the Republican Party that is speaking, it is the president of the United States. It is one of the institutions that is part of society: the presidency, the Parliament, the entire bureaucratic apparatus of a given State”, he states.
“The Presidency institution is a State institution, which must serve all citizens of the United States of North America, it must be a neutral structure, an impartial structure, that is, republican. And it is not”, he highlights.
