President Lula (PT) defines the tariff imposed by the Donald Trump government on Brazilian products as a “strategic error”, in an article published in the newspaper The Washington Post. In the text, he highlights Brazil’s willingness to dialogue, but considers that unilateral decisions can harm both the United States and the bilateral relationship.
“Attempts to impose ideological constraints on the bilateral partnership, or to instrumentalize it for electoral purposes, are not sustainable. Never before had a North American Secretary of State described Brazil as a non-friendly country. No one will defeat us based on lies”, wrote the PT member.
The publication of the article occurred one day after the Brazilian government denied visas to two members of Donald Trump’s government who intended to act as international observers of the Brazilian elections.
The other important demonstration this weekend against far-right offensives on the continent seeking to interfere in the October elections was a response to the pronouncement of a series of offenses by the president of Argentina, Javier Milei. The Argentine leader was present at the launch of Flávio Bolsonaro’s candidacy, this Saturday (25). The speeches were addressed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes.
Itamaraty summoned the Brazilian ambassador to Argentina, Júlio Bitelli, for consultations. Bitelli should arrive in Brasília between the night of this Sunday (26) and the early hours of Monday (27), according to information from Brazil Agency.
The gesture of Brazilian diplomacy is interpreted as a sign of worsening tension in relations between the two countries.
Still on Saturday, the president of the Court, Edson Fachin, had already repudiated the statements in a note, coming out in defense of Moraes. “By reaffirming the full autonomy of the Brazilian Judiciary, the Presidency of the STF deplores demonstrations that are incompatible with the civility that should characterize relations between States,” stated Fachin.
