Hugo de los Reyes Chávez, father of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, died this Tuesday (9) at the age of 91. The causes of death have not yet been released.
He was governor of the state of Barinas for three consecutive terms, from 1998 to 2008. In addition to Hugo Chávez, he had 5 other children. Adán and Argenis Chávez were also governors of Barinas. His son Aníbal was mayor of Alberto Arvelo, the state capital, from 2004 to 2016.
Reyes Chávez became a member of the Democratic Action party and, years later, would found together with Hugo Chávez the Fifth Republic Movement (MVR), the first Chavista party.
The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, expressed solidarity with Chávez’s family. On his social media profile, Maduro said that he “counted on his affection, advice, friendship and good humor.”
“Today the landscape has changed, master Hugo de los Reyes Chávez, the ‘roble del llano’, has left, aged 91 and until the last second he was firm, lucid, loyal, in the fight, thinking about his people, his countrymen, his fellow countrymen, in their city,” he said.
