The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, met this Tuesday (30) with the Minister of Defense of Brazil, José Múcio Monteiro, special envoy of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to coordinate the sending of humanitarian aid and technical support after the two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that devastated the country, as part of a gesture of regional solidarity in the face of the emergency.
The Brazilian minister emphasized the close relationship between Caracas and Brasília. “Everyone knows how much my president cares about Venezuela. From now on, Brazil and Venezuela are one country”, highlighted Monteiro. Almost 2,000 people died as a result of the earthquakes and thousands are injured, homeless or missing.
Brazil mobilized a contingent of 100 military personnel for the mission, made up of 40 health professionals and 60 marines from the Navy’s Immediate Response Force for Environmental Disasters (Frida), in addition to setting up a field hospital in the city of La Guaira, the city hardest hit by the earthquakes.
The field hospital has the capacity to carry out 200 medical consultations per day. In addition, telecommunications equipment equipped with spectrum analyzer technology and high-sensitivity antennas designed to track cell phone signals under the rubble was sent.
The Brazilian delegation also includes representatives from other ministries and Caixa Econômica Federal. The Brazilian operation will remain in Venezuela for an initial period of 15 days, with the possibility of extension for another 15 days, until the situation is under control.
Delcy Rodríguez, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, and other Venezuelan ministers, expressed her gratitude for the gesture of fraternity and solidarity between the two nations in this moment of adversity, highlighting the commitment of the international community.
3,660 rescuers and 148 canine units from 51 international delegations are mobilized in Venezuelan territory, working side by side with rescue teams from all Venezuelan states, totaling 26,127 people helping victims.
