At the end of his term, US President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use long-range US missiles against Russia. Moscow reacted to reports of Biden’s decision by reiterating that authorization by the US will generate a ānew round of tensionā.
Information about American authorization for Kiev was published by the New York Times. According to the NYT, the decision ārepresents a major change in American politicsā.
The White House’s change in stance comes due to the alleged sending of North Korean military personnel to fight alongside the Russians. The decision, however, reinforces the US role in a proxy war against Moscow, using Ukraine as the centerpiece of the conflict.
The daily said the United States intended to āsend a message to the North Koreans that their forces are vulnerable and that they should not send more.ā
āIf such a decision was really formulated and brought to the attention of the Kiev regime, then, of course, this is a round of tension and a qualitatively new situation from the point of view of US involvement in this conflict,ā said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian voice..
The outgoing US administration of Joe Biden continues to āadd fuel to the fire and provoke a further escalation of the conflictā in Ukraine, the Russian added. The Moscow representative stressed that this position āmust be absolutely clear to everyoneā.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, reacted to the news this Sunday (17), via the Telegram app. āAttacks are not made with words. These things are not announced. The missiles will speak for themselves,ā he said in a video.
Conservative estimates state that the missiles can reach a distance of 320 km, a radius sufficient to reach parts of southern Russian territory, on the border with Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted last September that a potential decision to use long-range Western weapons against Russia would mean nothing less than direct involvement of the United States and other NATO countries in the war in Ukraine.
