Argentine deputy proposes repudiation of Milei’s speeches against Lula

Argentine deputy Jorge Taiana (Unión por la Pátria, left) presented this Monday (27.Jul.2026) a draft declaration in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies to repudiate the statements made by the president of Argentina, Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza, right) against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). On Saturday (Jul 25), Milei participated of the PL national convention in São Paulo, which made the candidacy official of Flavio Bolsonaro (PL) to the Presidency. During his speech, he called Lula a “burglar” e “prisoner” and said that the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes is a “bald trash”.

Taiana’s project expresses “strong condemnation of the events and of the slander and violent insults” directed by Milei against Lula and against the STF minister. According to journalist João Paulo Charleaux, from Uola group of 30 deputies supported Taiana’s initiative. This group represents 12% of the composition of the Argentine Chamber of Deputies, made up of 257 deputies.

Jorge Taiana was chancellor of Argentina during the terms of former presidents Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) and Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015). He defended Lula and stated that Milei’s statements were “blatant interference in the internal affairs of another State” and from “violation of the principles of non-intervention and self-determination of peoples”.

Taiana’s draft statement questions the participation of the Argentine chancellor, Pablo Quirno, and the consul in São Paulo, Luis María Kreckler, in the Liberal Party (PL) event at which Milei spoke. According to the deputy, there is concern about the tension caused by the president of Argentina.

shattered diplomacy

This Monday (Jul 27), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the Brazilian ambassador to Argentina, Julio Bitelli, after Milei’s statements.

In diplomacy, summoning an ambassador for consultations is a sign of great dissatisfaction with the country in which the diplomat serves. It does not mean an effective diplomatic rupture, but it highlights a great strain on relations between governments. There is no standard deadline for the ambassador’s return – the decision is made on a case-by-case basis.

The Argentine deputy said there is concern that Milei’s actions risk diplomatic and commercial cooperation between the countries.

“This concern intensifies even more when considering Brazil’s strategic importance for Argentina, as it is our country’s main trading partner and the main destination for Argentine industrial exports”said Taiana.
