Thiago Ávila, one of the 12 crew members of the Flotilha Liberdade coalition, arrived in Brazil this Friday (13). The Madleen sailboat was heading for the Gaza Strip on a humanitarian mission and was intercepted by the Israeli army on Sunday (8).
After landing in Guarulhos (SP), the activist argued that the Brazilian government breaks relations with Israel. For Ávila, it is urgent that Brazil leaves this “odious ideology”.
He added by saying, “All they have is their weapons, their hatred, their army.” Arriving at the airport, he met again with his wife and daughter of seven months.
After the vessel was barred by Israel, Ávila was arrested and sent to a lonely cell where she stayed for two days. The activist made hunger strike on Tuesday night (10), in protest against his kidnapping by Israeli forces.
On Sunday (8), Ávila denounced that the group of activists – among which were also the Swedish Greta Thunberg – was “risk of concrete life” and that Israel was “about to commit a new war crime.”
The group received assistance from the embassies of their respective countries. This Thursday (12), the Brazilian government issued a note, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirming “with satisfaction” the release of the activist.
