The capital Paris urged the far right in the first round of the legislative elections, held last Sunday (30). Of the 18 electoral districts, the National Rally (RN), the party of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, only managed to qualify for the second round in just one, while the left led the voting intentions. President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition also obtained more qualifications for the National Assembly dispute than the RN.

The city is also leading street demonstrations against the National Rally and its coalition, as Red reported this Sunday.

France holds elections this week for the National Assembly, dissolved by Macron after the far right’s devastating performance in the elections for the European parliament.

The French political system divides the country into 577 electoral districts, each of which is represented by just one deputy. To be elected, a deputy must win a simple majority (50% + 1 vote) in the first round, held last Sunday (30), or be the most voted (proportionally) in a second round, scheduled for next Sunday (7), contested not just by two, but by the number of candidates who achieve a minimum of 12.5% of the votes.

Of the 18 seats allocated to candidates in the French capital, nine were decided in the first round after the candidates obtained more than 50% of the votes in the constituency. The nine are from the New Popular Front (NFP), the left-wing coalition led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon (France Insoumise).

Of the other nine constituencies, Macron’s coalition, Ensemble, won the most votes in five of them, but failed to secure a majority (more than 50%). The NFP also led the race for three other Parisian seats in the National Assembly, but will need to contest a second round to secure these seats.

On the other hand, the National Rally was ousted and only got one qualification to contest the second round. Le Pen and Bardella’s party was behind even the coalition Union of the Far Right, led by the dissidents of the Republican party, which supported the RN and was therefore expelled from Nicolas Sarkozy’s party. The Union of the Far Right got two qualifications to contest the second round.
