Ismail Haniyeh, visited Istanbul this Saturday (Apr 20); Turkish president once again condemned Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh visited Istanbul this Saturday (Apr 20, 2024) to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. During the meeting, Erdogan stated that Turkey remains committed to a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the creation of a Palestinian state.

The Turkish presidency said in a statement that Erdogan and Haniyeh also discussed Israel’s attacks on Palestine, particularly Gaza, as well as efforts to ensure the continued delivery of humanitarian aid and promote a “lasting peace process in the region”.

“It is crucial that Palestinians act with unity in this process. The strongest response to Israel and the path to victory lies in unity and integrity.”said Erdogan this Saturday (Apr 20), after talks at Dolmabahce Palace.

It is the extremist group’s leader’s first visit to Turkey since the start of the war against Israel in the Gaza Strip on October 7. The meeting coincides with rising regional tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s attack on Tel Aviv on April 13.

“Erdogan stressed that Israel should not take advantage of developments (with Iran) and that efforts to bring attention back to the Gaza Strip are important”the statement added.

The Turkish president is a staunch critic of Israeli policies in Gaza, frequently expressing support for the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.

He says he does not identify the group as a “terrorist organization”. Erdogan has previously stated that he prefers to call Hamas “liberation group” what “fight to protect your lands and your citizens”.
