US COMMISSION SAYS MORAES “CENSORS” OPPOSITION TO THE LULA GOVERNMENT
On Wednesday (April 17), the Judicial Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives published a report accusing Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), of “censor” any Brazilian opposition against the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
In addition to mentioning the names of Brazilians targeted by alleged censorship, the document states that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, takes the same measures as Moraes against the North American population. According to congressmen, the Democrat agrees with the wave of attacks on freedom of expression around the world.
UNITED STATES VETOS ENTRY OF THE STATE OF PALESTINE INTO THE UN
On Thursday (April 18), the UN Security Council (United Nations) barred the Palestinian Authority from joining as a full United Nations state. The United States, which is a permanent member of the council, vetoed the resolution.
The result of the vote was 12 votes in favor, 1 against and 2 abstentions. In a speech, Brazil, which has recognized the sovereignty of the State of Palestine since 2010, asked other countries to “fully comply with their international obligations”and guided the vote in favor, despite not being able to participate in the election.
ISRAEL GOVERNMENT RESPONDS IRAN ATTACKS
Also on Thursday (April 18), Israel launched air strikes against Iran. The missiles were launched in the Isfahan region, 340 meters from the Iranian capital Tehran. The Israeli government has not confirmed responsibility for the offensive.
According to Iran, no military or nuclear structures were damaged. Data on injuries in the attack were also not released.
The operation was in retaliation for Iran’s attack on Israel on April 13, which also caused little damage to the Jewish country. Tension between the 2 countries escalated after Israel allegedly attacked the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, in the capital of Syria, killing officials from the Persian country, on April 1. Israel also did not comment on the operation.
ELECTIONS BEGIN IN INDIA
Parliamentary elections in India began on Friday (April 19, 2024). It is the largest election in the world, lasting 44 days. The voting period ends on June 1st. The result should be announced on the 4th of the same month.
Indians will choose 543 legislators for the Lok Sabha, the country’s lower house, with a 5-year term. The prime minister will be chosen indirectly by the party or coalition that reaches the majority of seats.
In power for a decade, Prime Minister Narenda Modi is seeking his 3rd consecutive term. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to win handily, according to polls.
OLYMPIC TORCH IS LIT IN OLYMPIA
On Tuesday (April 16), the Olympic torch was lit in a ceremony held in the time of Hera, in Olympia (Greece). There are concerns about terrorist attacks, which could change plans for the opening ceremony.
