The National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE) invited the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the African Union, the European Union, UN experts, BRICS and the Carter Center of the United States to observe the 2024 elections in the country.
The measure is part of what was signed in the Barbados agreement, in October 2023. The text defined that the election should be held in the second half of 2024 and would include observation missions from the European Union, the Carter Center and the Organization of Nations United (UN).
The president of the body, Elvis Amoroso, said this Thursday (7) that other entities were also invited, but did not detail which ones they were. During the 8th summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) held last week in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said he had convened a delegation of observers from the United Nations (UN) and the Celac itself to monitor the 2024 election.
According to him, the entities called must participate in the election as observers if they comply with “legal standards”. Also according to Amoroso, the CNE will be in permanent session until the date of the elections to guarantee compliance with the process.
The electoral schedule was released this Wednesday. The voter registration day for candidates will be from March 21st to 25th and the electoral campaign will be from July 4th to 25th. The election will be on July 28th.
The elections will take place on a Sunday and the date also marks the 70th birthday of former president Hugo Chávez. The CNE also said that, from May 22nd to 29th, the “definitive electoral registration” will be carried out, in which the number of Venezuelan voters eligible for the election will be known.
At a press conference, Amoroso confirmed the date of the elections. During the day, the CNE also published the electoral calendar on its website.
The electoral calendar was defined after a dialogue table promoted by the National Assembly of Venezuela that brought together experts, politicians from different parties and representatives from various sectors of society, including the opposition.
The document proposed by the group had 27 possible dates for the 2024 elections and was signed by 152 people. The text was delivered to the National Electoral Council last Friday (1). The dialogue table opened on February 5th and lasted 23 days.
