How was it possible that for 40 years a spy infiltrated the US government and provided privileged information to Cuba? The United States government seeks answers to this question by prosecuting former ambassador Victor Manuel Rocha, 73 years old.
It is not possible to predict whether the investigation will be able to identify the reasons that led to the failure of the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), on the other hand, what we all know is that Cuba managed to protect leader Fidel Castro during the 49 years he was in power.
On Thursday (29), Rocha pleaded guilty to the US Federal Court. The spy born in Colombia and naturalized in the United States served at the State Department (equivalent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) between 1981 and 2002. During the period he was on the US National Security Council (1994 and 1995), as ambassador to Bolivia between 1999 and 2002 and held positions at the embassies of the Dominican Republic and Argentina. Between 2006 and 2012, he served as advisor to the US Army Southern Command.
Although it has not yet been disclosed what types of contributions Rocha made to Cuba, prosecutors have already pointed out that, since the beginning of his diplomatic career, he was involved in clandestine activities, provided false information to deceive US authorities, in addition to meeting with Cuban agents over the decades.
The charges brought are based on the former diplomat’s confession to an FBI agent disguised as a member of Cuba’s General Intelligence Department, who unmasked him after four decades of service to the Revolution.
A good son of communist ideals and even out of shape when it comes to espionage after forty years of extremely delicate service – considering he was caught in a slip –, comrade Victor Manuel Rocha called the USA an “enemy” and referred to Fidel Castro as “Commander” in the recordings that “got” him. He has been detained since December.
