President Lula and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira met with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Friday (1), during the 8th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), in Kingstown , capital of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
In the meeting lasting more than an hour, according to Planalto, they discussed commercial relations, partnerships to combat illegal mining in the border area and the Venezuelan elections taking place in the second half of the year.

According to the government, Maduro indicated that the country has shown economic growth and a drop in inflation. In this way, they discussed alternatives on how Venezuela should pay the debt it owes to Brazil, in addition to expanding trade between the countries.
Regarding the Yanomami issue, they discussed how to increase the fight against illegal mining. Indigenous lands are in the border region between the two countries and criminals use this to evade inspections. Policing in Brazil has been expanded and reinforced with the Government House installed in Roraima, on Thursday (29).

Regarding the elections taking place in the country, Maduro stated that he articulates what the election will be like with the opposition parties in the National Assembly and that the vote will have international observers to audit and guarantee fairness.
Regarding the dispute over Essequibo, Lula did not deal with Maduro, nor did he address the issue during his visit to Guyana on Thursday. On that occasion, the Brazilian president stated that the “Brazil will remain committed to ensuring that things happen as smoothly as possible. If in 100 years it was not possible to solve this problem, it is possible that it will take us a few more decades, the only thing I am sure of is that violence will not solve this problem, it will create other problems”emphasized Lula.
