The President of China, Xi Jinping, will make a state visit to the United States between September 23 and 25, at the invitation of American President Donald Trump. The trip was confirmed this Monday (21) by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the visit, Xi and Trump will have in-depth exchanges on important issues related to relations between China and the United States, and world peace and development. The information was presented by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun during the ministry’s regular press conference.
Guo stated that “head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in the strategic guidance of China-US relations.”
The meeting will take place about four months after Trump’s visit to China in May, when the presidents met in Beijing.
Xi and Trump will now hold reciprocal visits within a period of six months. According to Guo, “the exchange of visits between the two presidents within this period will have historical significance and will represent a milestone” for relations between the countries.
China also hopes that the meeting will contribute to consolidating a relationship of strategic stability with the United States, combining dialogue and cooperation with the management of differences.
Guo said China will work with the United States to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, properly manage differences, expand benefits for the two peoples and contribute to “world peace, stability and prosperity.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not detail which specific international issues will be on the meeting’s agenda. The announcement broadly mentions relations between China and the United States and issues related to world peace and development.
Global Development Initiative
The press conference took place on the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), launched by Xi Jinping in 2021 during the UN General Assembly. According to Guo, more than US$23 billion was mobilized and more than 2,000 cooperation projects were carried out in the following years, reaching more than 70 countries and benefiting more than 40 million people. China will hold a high-level dialogue on the five years of the initiative on September 25 in New York.
Guo was also asked about Chinese restrictions on rare earth exports to Japan and the possibility of the topic being discussed at the meeting between Xi and Trump.
After referring specific questions to the relevant authorities, the spokesperson reiterated that China prohibits, in accordance with its laws and regulations, the export of dual-use items for military users or purposes in Japan, as well as materials that could contribute to strengthening Japan’s military capabilities. Guo also said China’s position on preserving the security and stability of global production and supply chains for critical minerals has not changed.
Chinese Vice Premier Conducts Economic Consultations in US
The confirmation of the visit comes as China and the United States maintain contacts at different levels. In the economic and commercial field, a new round of consultations was held on September 20, in New York, with the participation of Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and American trade representative Jamieson Greer.
He Lifeng leads the Chinese delegation during a visit to the United States between September 19 and 23, dedicated to economic and trade consultations between the two countries.
According to the Chinese government, the parties maintained frank, in-depth and constructive exchanges on economic and commercial issues of common interest. The talks included implementing consensus reached in previous rounds and promoting bilateral trade and investment. The delegations also held a dialogue on issues related to artificial intelligence.
At Monday’s press conference, Guo was asked specifically about the results of the conversations between He Lifeng and Bessent, but referred journalists to the Chinese statement and stated that he had no additional information.
Wang Yi and Rubio keep in touch before visit
On the diplomatic front, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by telephone with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on September 17, just days before the official confirmation of Xi’s trip.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two maintained an in-depth exchange on upcoming high-level contacts between the countries. Wang said that China-US relations were generally moving towards a constructive relationship of strategic stability defined by the two heads of state.
Wang also highlighted diplomacy between heads of state as the “anchor” of China-US relations and urged countries to prepare for the next stage of high-level exchanges based on equality, respect and mutual benefit.
The Chinese chancellor also advocated strengthening communication, expanding cooperation, properly managing differences and respecting the fundamental interests of each side.
Wang also said that Beijing and Washington should send a positive message about the two countries’ commitment to a constructive relationship of strategic stability and the joint promotion of global peace and development.
In addition to the bilateral relationship, Wang and Rubio exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and other international issues.
