Iran confirmed last Wednesday (2) the attack carried out on US bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, classifying it as retaliation for previous casualties suffered by its armed forces. Tehran also said that any possible response to new attacks “will be harsh and destructive” and that it will continue “until final victory”.
According to Iran, the attack on US bases was carried out “in response to US crimes against the Iranian people”. As part of the escalation in recent days, Tehran accuses the United States of attacking a residence hosting a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak, Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, killing five civilians and injuring more than 70 people. Among the dead was a child. The US, however, denies this.
In actions against US allies, Iran claims to have attacked satellite communications systems, equipment depots and fighter hangars at the Ahmad Al-Jaber air base in Kuwait. In the United Arab Emirates, attacks were carried out on troop positions and radar systems at Al Minhad air base.
Iran used missiles and drones against US military installations in Arab countries. In a statement, the Iranian military described the Ahmed al-Jaber base as an important logistics and support hub for US forces in West Asia. The Al Minhad base, according to Iran, functions as an important air support and transport center for foreign forces.
In Kuwait, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Iranian action, describing it as a violation of sovereignty. “The continuation of these brazen attacks reflects a hostile approach and constitutes a dangerous escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region,” the ministry said.
Faced with the worsening situation, the United Nations (UN) stepped in to express concern about the new attacks between the USA and Iran. “I can say that the secretary general [António Guterres] is deeply concerned by the resumption of overnight exchanges of fire between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Secretary-General is alarmed by reports of civilian casualties, including an attack that reportedly hit a wedding ceremony in Iran,” commented UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric at a press conference.
Meanwhile, Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, classified the attack attributed to the US on the house where the wedding was held as a “war crime”.
Calling the action a “heinous and horrifying crime”, Darzi mentioned, in a letter addressed to Guterres, that the fact “constitutes a serious and flagrant violation of the fundamental norms of international humanitarian law and, given the circumstances of the attack, constitutes a war crime”.
