Russia carried out a new massive attack with missiles and drones against Ukrainian regions in the early hours of Thursday (20). The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the attack, claiming to hit strategic Ukrainian targets. Still, at least 16 people died in the attack, Ukrainian authorities say.
According to the Russian ministry, the attack was carried out using land, air and sea precision weapons, as well as long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, targeting military industrial facilities, a transport and logistics center and warehouses in and around Kiev.
According to the ministry, the massive attack targeted companies associated with the production of Flamingo drones and missiles, as well as logistics centers.
“In Kiev, the following locations were hit: the industrial company Fire Point LLC, which produced components for long- and medium-range attack UAVs, and also assembled and stored propellants used in Flamingo cruise missiles,” the Russian Defense Ministry statement said.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that a total of 36 Kh-101, Iskander-K and Kh-59 cruise missiles, eight Kalibr missiles, two Banderoli missiles were launched, as well as Onyx, Zircon, Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, as well as 168 attack drones.
It was reported that the capital Kiev, the city hardest hit in the bombing, had an air raid warning that lasted nearly nine hours. In addition to Kiev and the surrounding region, infrastructure in the Odessa and Chernihiv regions were also attacked.
The Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported that 34 people were injured in the attack, in addition to the 16 deaths.
Escalation of war
The attack takes place in a context of escalating war in Ukraine, with intensified attacks on both sides of the conflict. While Russia increases its missile and drone attacks in Kiev and other regions, in particular, the Black Sea, claiming to hit military and strategic infrastructure targets, Ukraine also carries out constant drone attacks against oil refinery areas and logistics centers.
Commenting on the prospects for negotiating peace in the Ukraine war, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that there are currently no “optimistic preconditions” for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
“Currently, due to the position of the Kiev regime, there are no preconditions for optimism regarding a peaceful resolution. The dynamics on the front lines are well known. The head of state and the supreme commander-in-chief have already repeatedly spoken about this. The special military operation continues,” Peskov said.
