The spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, commented this Monday (27) on Ukraine’s attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea, classifying it as an “aggressive action”, and stated that the Kremlin does not want the conflict to expand.
Peskov recalled that Ukraine has also attacked critical energy infrastructure in Germany and, recently, the Caspian Gas Pipeline Consortium (CPC) in Kazakhstan. “In the past, this would have been a casus belli (reason for war),” Peskov emphasized.
“Iran is a sovereign state, very resolute in defending its rights, and has the corresponding potential in this context. We will see how the situation develops. But the geographic expansion of this conflict is certainly something we do not want to see,” he added.
Earlier, Iranian ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali, quoted by the Vedomosti newspaper, stated that Iran expects a “serious response” from Russia following Ukraine’s attack on an Iranian ship.
The Ukrainian attack against an Iranian ship took place last Saturday (25) in Russian territorial waters in the Caspian Sea.
According to the Iranian ambassador, the ship was anchored five kilometers off the coast during a storm and was not carrying military cargo. An Iranian sailor died in the attack. Jalali called the incident a “criminal act” and emphasized that Tehran reserves the right to respond.
He also reported that Iranian and Russian Foreign Ministers Abbas Araghchi and Serguei Lavrov spoke by telephone on July 26. According to the ambassador, Russia helped in the evacuation of sailors from the area hit by the attack.
Tehran had previously claimed that Ukraine attacked the Iranian merchant ship to drag Europe into the war in the region.
