The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, became the target of a complaint for misappropriation of public funds and failure to fulfill his duties, after using the official plane and State resources to participate in the convention in São Paulo that made the candidacy of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) official for the Presidency of Brazil.
The action, presented by lawyers José Magioncalda and Juan Martín Fazio, maintains that the representative’s deployment to a political act of the Brazilian opposition represents a diversion of public money from its specific purpose.
According to the complainants, the use of the presidential plane and the official delegation to support a party candidacy in another country would constitute the crimes of misappropriation of funds and failure to fulfill the duties of a public official.
“State resources were diverted to satisfy the interests of a political faction, causing serious damage to bilateral diplomatic relations,” says the complaint.
Milei’s trip to Brazil
During the Liberal Party (PL) convention, last Saturday (25/07), Milei called the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a “prisoner” and minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), “bald trash” — the magistrate prohibited the Argentine leader from visiting Jair Bolsonaro in his house arrest.
The Brazilian government reacted to Milei’s attacks by calling its ambassador in Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, back to Brasília for consultations. Furthermore, Itamaraty summoned the Argentine ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Raimondi, to “convey disgust” with the ultraliberal president’s stance.
However, Casa Rosada does not intend to apologize to the Brazilian president after the insults from the Argentine president, who also called his Brazilian counterpart a “thief” and “leftist”. The information comes from La Nación, in a report published this Sunday (26/07), based on diplomatic and government sources.
“There will be no apology,” commented a senior Casa Rosada official, familiar with the Argentine president’s animosity toward the Brazilian leader. According to the newspaper, despite the distance between the two Latin American leaders, few people within the government expected an attack of such proportions.
In addition to attending the convention, Milei also met with the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, where he received the Order of Ipiranga, the highest honor granted by the São Paulo government.
