The general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Psuv) and Minister of Interior and Justice of the South American country, Diosdado Cabello, held a press conference this Monday afternoon (27), in Caracas (Venezuela), during which he harshly criticized the disinformation campaign articulated by the business media.
“How many campaigns have they carried out this month? One worse than the other. They invented that tsunami, on the 25th, the next day. They had to be there to see the impact that this perversity had on the people of La Guaira. How many lives were not saved by this? It doesn’t matter to them”, criticized the minister.
“This last month has taught us a lot, it has taught us a lot about humanity, about detachment, but it has also taught us a lot about the vileness of those people who use human pain to unleash terrible communication campaigns on our homeland to cause harm,” he added.
“This is a campaign orchestrated with money. They are the same media actors who said that what was needed to fall Chavismo was an earthquake and that, if there were two, it would be better. They were happy about this and mounted their campaign”, added the Psuv secretary general.
Pea Housing Mission
Then, Cabello began to respond to each of the opinion matrices launched by the disinformation campaign. One of them was that the buildings that had collapsed were supposedly built by Misión Vivienda, the government’s popular housing program.
“It doesn’t occur to me, as I was down there, to blame the private sector for the buildings that fell. The two seismic movements that occurred were devastating and everything along those lines was going to fall. Whether it was private or public. In the end, it is said that 4% of the homes that suffered damage were built by commander Hugo Chávez. The rest are private, private urban developments. Only 4%”, highlighted Cabello.
Fake news from mass graves
The Minister of Justice also commented on the fake news that circulated in international media that the government was burying the dead without identification.
“La Guaira doesn’t have space in the cemetery and the mayor said that we had room for around 120 in the cemetery which I believe is called Esperança. 120 is a lot for a city like La Guaira, but not in the middle of two earthquakes. We did fingerprint identification, dental impressions, photographs of the person, DNA samples for identification in cases where it could not be recognized, all with a medical record for cases of unknowns. And they set up a campaign anyway”, he declared.
Alleged government abandonment
Finally, Diosdado Cabello classified as a lie the information about an alleged impediment to the arrival of humanitarian aid to the affected areas. He said that it was necessary to restrict access to guarantee assistance to the victims and denied that the government had abandoned the population.
“You have to have a lot of stomach and evil to mount a campaign about the dead. They entered the buildings where they knew they were going to rescue a person to record. Pure sadism. They didn’t identify themselves. It was a big campaign. The tsunami campaign, the campaign that they weren’t allowing humanitarian aid to arrive. We moved to Poliedro, the registration site. 31 thousand volunteer people went there and registered. And why? Because a lot of people were going down to La Guaira. And, when We were rescuing someone, it could take up to 3 hours in a traffic jam and they could die.
“Wretched people! They said that the government had left people alone, they said that people were sleeping on the street and the people themselves say that they stay on the street because they were afraid of staying in the apartment and shivering again”, said the minister.
Venezuela Reborn Plan
At this Monday’s press conference, the secretary general of the Psuv presented an overview of the militants’ actions after the June 24 earthquake and announced the new phase of the national reconstruction plan. He explained that the party suspended its usual meetings for a month so that the leadership and base could dedicate themselves fully to volunteer work in the camps and helping victims.
With the initial emergency situation under control, the group is now fully incorporated into the Venezuela Renace plan, aimed at rebuilding the most affected states, such as La Guaira, Caracas and Miranda. According to the director, more than 700 volunteer engineers are mobilized to inspect housing structures.
“One of the instructions we are giving to the party is to fully incorporate the new stage of reconstruction of the great Venezuela Renace plan. We have already advanced in the phase of aid, of helping. We are now moving on to the reconstruction phases. All the delegations that came for this first phase of rescuers, of field hospitals, have already left the country. But we are going to a next phase”, he announced.
“There are volunteers now at all levels. More than 700 volunteer engineers have been involved in reviewing housing structures and inspections”, added the Minister of Justice.
Dialogue with opposition will discuss the end of sanctions
Asked about the start of dialogue between a sector of the opposition and the government, announced by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, for August 1st, the leader said that Venezuela is a champion in seeking understanding, but emphasized that dialogue does not mean capitulating.
“The government of Venezuela, I believe, has been the champion of dialogue. They carried out a coup d’état against Hugo Chávez and the first thing he did was take out a crucifix and call for dialogue in front of the whole world. Dialogue with those who gave him the coup d’état. How many times has President Maduro called for dialogue in this country? How many? How many attempts were made and they aborted and abandoned the decisions that would be taken at the last minute. And we said that we speak to anyone. Dialogue does not mean capitulate”, he highlighted.
On the other hand, he highlighted that, while Chavismo will arrive cohesive for these conversations, the opposition is increasingly divided.
“We are united in a single bloc. The opposition sector, I don’t know how many pieces it is in. This dialogue process that was called for divided the opposition further. Now there are more pieces. And when I say pieces, they are pieces. We are going with a single proposal: peace in this country, and the lifting of sanctions must be part of this dialogue.”
In this sense, the secretary reinforced that the request for the end of all sanctions imposed by the United States against Venezuela will be on the negotiating table. He stated that the economic blockade is a restriction that prevents the country’s free development and hinders access to resources needed to rebuild the affected areas.
“We continue to ask for the end of all the sanctions that exist against the country, of all of them, because it is a restriction that prevents the free development of Venezuela as a sovereign and independent country. This is a demand that we have been making for a long time,” he declared.
Exit from the International Criminal Court
Finally, Cabello confirmed Venezuela’s definitive exit from the International Criminal Court (ICC), announced last weekend. The minister stated that the institution is permanently used for unfounded attacks against the country, while “saying nothing” about “many crimes around the world”.
“The decision had already been taken some time ago and now we have materialized it through the important attacks that, since this instance, have been made against our country, against our people, unfounded signals, and we took advantage of all the disaster they have there and left. It is a true disaster. Remember that it was like that when we left the OAS, we withdrew and then the OAS continued saying that we were part of it. Every now and then they declare something stupid and we will continue moving forward. We don’t need to be at the International Criminal Court. There are many crimes in the world and the International Criminal Court says nothing”, said the minister.
