New Labor leader replaces Keir Starmer and says he will take action to reduce cost of living impact
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) congratulated Andy Burnham (Labour Party) for taking office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom this Monday (20.Jul.2026). In a publication on his X profile, the PT member wished the new prime minister success and said he intends to expand trade and investments between the 2 countries.
“I congratulate Andy Burnham, leader of the Labor Party and new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. I wish him every success as head of the British government”wrote Lula.
“Brazil and the United Kingdom have maintained relations for over 200 years and have built a modern and dynamic partnership. Count on my commitment to strengthen our relations and expand bilateral trade and investments”he declared.
Lula also cited democracy, multilateralism and sustainable development as areas of cooperation with the new British government.
“I am certain that we will be able to give new impetus to friendship between our countries and contribute to a more prosperous, fair and peaceful world”he wrote.
BURNHAM POSSESSION
Burnham replaced Keir Starmer (Labor Party), who announced on June 22, 2026 that he would leave office.
Before the 1st speech, Burnham met with King Charles III, who invited him to form a new government.
Burnham said he will introduce measures to reduce the impact of the cost of living and advocated the recovery of political stability. It also announced that it will release a 10-year plan for the United Kingdom later this year.
“The UK needs to show the world that it can regain stability. That’s our challenge: to make politics work and work better. I know people are fed up with politics. I hear you. I want to be honest: we haven’t been good enough and we need to improve.”he declared.
