The Iranian government stated that the United States violated the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries after attacks on coastal bases and non-military installations in the coastal areas of Hormozgan province and Mahshahr this Wednesday (8).
In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced an operation against US military targets in West Asia. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, in turn, declared that the truce “is over” after the exchange of attacks between the two countries.
The speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the United States had failed to comply with the 14-point memorandum of understanding. In a post on the social network According to Ghalibaf, “the era of intimidation and extortion is over.” “This isn’t going anywhere. We’re not giving in,” he added.
According to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US operation on Iranian territory represents a violation of Article 2, fourth paragraph, of the Charter of the United Nations (UN). The excerpt from the document establishes that “all members must avoid, in their international relations, the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political dependence of any State, or any other action incompatible with the purposes of the United Nations”.
The ministry also stated that the attack constitutes “a flagrant violation” of the first clause of the memorandum of understanding mediated by Pakistan, which determined the interruption of all military operations. Also according to the statement, “responsibility for the dangerous consequences of this escalation lies with the US regime, which violated the treaty.”
Furthermore, he reported that the United States Treasury Department’s decision to revoke authorization for the sale of Iranian oil, a commitment provided for in the memorandum, also violates the agreement. The note adds that the role of the United States in Iran’s maritime operations in the Strait of Hormuz and support for Israel’s military actions in Lebanon rendered “important and fundamental parts” of the understanding ineffective.
The Iranian government also declared that all countries, especially those on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, have an obligation to prevent their territories or facilities from being used for actions against Iran. According to the note, “any cooperation in the commission of the crime of aggression against Iran amounts to complicity and participation in that crime”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called on the UN Security Council and UN Secretary-General António Guterres to fulfill their responsibilities in preserving regional and international peace and security. The ministry also stated that, based on Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran’s Armed Forces will not hesitate to defend the country’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty and security. The quoted passage speaks of the “inherent right to individual or collective self-defence” in the event of an armed attack against a member of the UN.
Retaliation
Following the US bombings, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a retaliatory operation against 85 points linked to US military installations in West Asia. According to the statement, the offensive hit US military installations in Port Salman, Bahrain’s Fifth Naval District and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, with the use of missiles and drones.
The corporation reported that an American MQ-9 drone was shot down during the operation. In another statement, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman Hossein Mobini said the aircraft was shot down over the Khoromoj region in Bushehr province following the US air raid.
Trump, in turn, stated that the truce between Washington and Tehran “is over” after Iranian attacks on US bases in the Gulf. Oil prices rose 5% after the US president’s statements.
During the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump declared it “just a waste of time dealing with them”, referring to Iranian authorities. The president also called Iran “scum” and said that the country is governed by “crazy people”.
Trump also accused Iran of distorting the content of the agreement signed between Washington and Tehran on June 17. According to the president, “everyone agreed, no nuclear weapons. We made an agreement. They come out, make jokes with the press, say we never talked about it. There’s something wrong with them, they’re crazy.”
