A crowd of millions of Iranians has participated in the funeral procession of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, through the streets of Tehran, which began on Saturday (4) and is expected to last seven days. Khamenei was assassinated during attacks by the United States and Israel against the country on February 28 of this year, starting a conflict that continues to this day.

In addition to paying tribute to Khamenei, the crowd also took the opportunity to protest against the Donald Trump government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iran’s Secretary of National Security, Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, stated that the population calls for “resistance and revenge”.

The economist and general director of the portal Opera MundiTom Altman, followed the rite and evaluates, at the same time, BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de Fatowhich is an event of great geopolitical importance. “It was a mix of religious devotion and also a political meeting of a population that is defending itself from a foreign attack. I, personally, had never participated in an event of such magnitude. There were more than 11 million people here on the streets of Tehran. It is worth remembering that this is not the only city where there will be tributes to the supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei”, he reports.

The processions should take place in other cities in the Persian country, and the body should go to a Shiite region in Iraq, where there will also be tributes. “It was not only a farewell event, but also a confirmation of this geopolitical positioning that Tehran has offered here in the region, here in the Middle East”, he assesses.

Altman highlights that the massive presence of the population deconstructs the Zionist-American narrative that the Iranian government does not have popular support. The economist recalls that, weeks before the attacks, Western propaganda was that the population as a whole was on the streets against the government.

“I don’t know what part of the population is against the regime, but I can guarantee you that, after the start of the conflict, the population began to support their government practically unanimously. The feeling here on the streets of Tehran is one of defense of the country, defense of the Islamic regime and even a sense of victory. This was quite interesting to observe in person. I spoke to some people who, eventually, were unhappy with some issues, some details of the Iranian regime’s laws, started to support almost 100% all the government actions until the conflict was resolved”, highlights Tom Altman.
