One month after appointing a new ambassador to the US Supreme Court, the Trump administration sends an official consultation to Brazil

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, sent, this Tuesday (30), the name of Daniel Perez as his nominee to head the American embassy in BrasĂlia (DF), which was treated by the Brazilian government as another chapter in the diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Despite recent divergences, the assessment at Palácio do Planalto is that the process will follow institutional procedures and will be conducted under technical criteria.
A member of the government stated that the nomination will be analyzed within the granting procedure approval — formal authorization granted by the host country for a diplomat to assume the post. According to him, although the public announcement of the name occurred even before the beginning of this rite, the situation is not considered unprecedented.
According to a palace source, Brazil does not intend to turn the evaluation into an ideological dispute. The guideline is to examine the nominee’s history and performance, and not his possible political proximity to Trump or sectors of the American right. “Being a Trumpist, extreme right-winger or having voted for Trump is not a reason for rejection”, summarized the source, arguing that only an action demonstrably contrary to Brazilian interests could weigh in the analysis.
The appointment comes amid increased tensions between BrasĂlia and Washington, caused by the threat of tariffs on Brazilian products, the trade investigation opened by the United States and the American decision to classify Brazilian criminal factions as terrorist organizations.
Behind the scenes, members of the government also assess that the moment requires caution to avoid a worsening of the diplomatic crisis. The strategy, according to the report made to the BdFis to preserve institutional channels of dialogue with the White House, even in the face of political and commercial differences.
One interlocutor also stated that the government considers it important to separate the bilateral relationship from the political situation. According to him, the conduct of the process of accepting the new ambassador should not be influenced by recent statements by US authorities nor by the nominee’s political alignment with President Trump.
