In the midst of the tragedy affecting the Venezuelan people, Cuba has reinforced its humanitarian aid by sending, to date, two groups of rescue teams to collaborate in search operations and care for those affected.

The team sent is made up of surgeons, specialists in forensic medicine and rescuers belonging to the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, who were immediately incorporated into the search operations and care for the victims.
In this way, the island expanded the assistance it already provided to the Venezuelan people through the Medical Mission that operates in the country’s 24 states. Its members had already begun support actions in the first hours after the earthquakes.
The group of experts arrived at Valencia International Airport, in the state of Carabobo, due to the damage that still limits the operation of Maiquetía International Airport, located in La Guaira, one of the regions most affected by the disaster.
According to the Cuban ambassador to Venezuela, Jorge Mayo, the coordination of the activities of Cuban professionals will be the responsibility of Nellys Molina, president of the Mission Bairro Adentro Foundation, together with other Venezuelan authorities. The objective is to organize assistance to affected communities, especially in La Guaira.
In turn, the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, thanked, through social media, the presence of “our sister Cuba’s rescuers”. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to the island for “extending its helping hand” in the midst of the catastrophe and stated that, in such adverse circumstances, the relationship between the two nations is strengthened.
The two earthquakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, which occurred just seconds apart on June 24, have left, to date, more than 1,700 dead, more than 5,000 injured and 15,000 homeless, totaling 22,619 people treated in hospitals and emergency centers. This is the biggest tragedy faced by the country in more than 120 years.
