At the end of the 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), held last Sunday (22) in Pyongyang, leader Kim Jong-un was unanimously re-elected as General Secretary of the party. The decision, taken by the 5 thousand delegates, symbolizes the continuity of the project of strengthening socialist unity and firm resistance against the onslaught of imperialism.
Self-sufficiency as a compass of sovereignty
Congress took an in-depth assessment of the achievements made in the last five years. Under the flag of Juche — the philosophy of self-sufficiency that guides the North Korean state — Kim Jong-un’s re-election was presented as the unanimous will of the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Kim highlighted that the DPRK has made significant advances in the country’s economy and defense. Strengthening nuclear deterrence was reaffirmed not as an end in itself, but as the national security pillar necessary to ensure that economic development and improved popular living standards occur without the interference of sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies.
Resistance against the neoliberal tide
The re-election proposal, approved by acclamation, reinforces People’s Korea’s ability to navigate against the “current” of globalized capitalism. The highest authority of the PTC elected new members to the Central Committee and approved resolutions that prioritize autonomous economic development, focused on social well-being.
Solidarity and Proletarian Internationalism
The 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea received recognition from China. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) highlighted the WPK’s historic role in regional stability. The communist parties of Vietnam and Laos reinforced “confidence in the success of socialist deliberations.” Russia emphasized the “common front against global hegemonism”.
