Ukraine announced on Friday (16) a nationwide air warning after Russian bombings carried out in the capital Kiev. The attacks take place amid the visit of the delegation of African leaders that is in the country with the aim of starting a peace mission.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, three people were injured – an elderly woman and two children – and residential areas were damaged.

African leaders who arrived in Kiev to discuss a peace initiative had to go into a security shelter during the missile attack. The peacekeeping mission is led by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, and the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphos, and also includes leaders from Zambia, Comoros and Egypt.

After the airstrike ended, a spokesman for the South African president posted on Twitter that the African leaders’ mission was going “well and according to plan”.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the Russian missile strike during African leaders’ visit to Kiev was a signal to Africa that Russia wanted more war, not peace.

“Putin is ‘building trust’ by launching the biggest missile strike against Kiev in weeks, as African leaders visit our capital. Russian missiles are a signal to Africa: Russia wants more war, not peace,” he said. Kuleba on his Twitter.

The African delegation stated that the plans to meet with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, are still in place this Friday. The expectation is that, after the visit to Ukraine, the African leaders will travel to Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier, it was reported by Reuters that African countries have developed “confidence measures” for a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev. They suggest, in particular, the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territories, the renunciation of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, as well as the suspension of the International Criminal Court’s warrant for the arrest of Vladimir Putin and the easing of sanctions.
