In Davos, the UN secretary general said that companies in the sector ignored climate studies and supported a “big lie”
The secretary general of the UN (United Nations), António Guterres, accused this Wednesday (18.jan.2023) oil giants of expanding their businesses in a way “incompatible” with human survival.
“Today, fossil fuel producers and their enablers are still rushing to expand production, knowing full well that their business model is incompatible with human survival. This insanity belongs in science fiction, but we know that ecosystem collapse is cold, solid scientific fact.” said during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Guterres recalled revelations made that showed that researchers from the US multinational ExxonMobil were able to accurately predict the impact that the company would have on current global warming in the 1970s. Even with the study, the oil company lobbied against climate guidelines.
“Like the tobacco industry, they trampled on their own science. The oil industry sold the big lie. And like the tobacco industry, those responsible must be held accountable.” declared.
The secretary general also said that every week “a new climate horror story,” emphasizing the importance of keeping the increase in global temperature within 1.5°C. The target was established during the 2015 Paris Agreement.
According to him, if nothing is done, soon the increase will be 2.8ºC, making many areas of the planet uninhabitable.
In November 2022, the UN released a document with reference guidelines for the creation of plans for the sustainable climate transition by countries, companies and organizations.
The document (complete, in English – 6 MB) was prepared by a group of 1,200 organizations and specialists from more than 100 countries and advises that strategies avoid ready-made slogans and exaggerations in the goals elaborated.
