This Tuesday (26/12), Chinese President Xi Jinping promised to resolutely prevent anyone from “separating Taiwan from China in any way.”

“China must deepen integration between the two sides, promote the peaceful development of cross-Taiwan Strait relations, and resolutely prevent anyone from separating Taiwan from China in any way,” he said at a conference commemorating the 130th anniversary of the birth of the former Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.

Beijing views Taiwan as its own territory within the one-China policy. However, Taipei receives support from the West to fight for its independence and also has support for purchasing weapons, especially from the United States.

At the same time, the Chinese leader rejected predictions from US military officials who talk about Taiwan’s reintegration into China in 2025 or 2027, stating that no deadline has been set for the plan.

Xi has spoken about Taiwan’s reunification plan at other times, but his statements on Tuesday come just over two weeks before the self-governed island elects a new leader.
