The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, launched, this Saturday (4), the national reconstruction plan “Great Mission Venezuela Reborn”. The objective is to recover the real estate sector in areas affected by the strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24, which caused damage and collapse of hundreds of buildings. The Venezuelan Ministry of Communications reported that at least 2,954 people died and 16,592 were injured in the catastrophe.

Rodríguez explained that the plan begins with the creation of a 200 million dollar fund for infrastructure reconstruction. “Venezuela will be reborn. Venezuela will overcome the pain (…) And the engines of the economy will start working again: the banking sector, the stock exchange, civil construction, entrepreneurship, the community economy, supply, hydrocarbons, the pharmaceutical industry, food. Then yes, little by little, but with firm steps, we will recover”, he declared.

The interim president also highlighted that a financing program will be created to provide monthly assistance for the next six months to those most affected. “We have also signed agreements with public and private banks to activate real estate credit with a subsidy of up to 80%,” he added. She also said that all taxes related to property registrations, rentals and purchases will be waived. Exports of construction materials are prohibited.

“Venezuela is entering a recovery process: recovery of infrastructure, recovery of housing. The Presidential Commission is actively checking, house by house, whether the place is habitable or not”, said the president. She also pointed out that the financing fund will work for the purchase and repair of properties.

Recovery in La Guaira

The reconstruction process in the state of La Guaira, the region most affected by the tremors, has already begun, said governor José Alejandro Terán. According to him, this is the second phase planned by the interim president to deal with the catastrophe. The plan will have three stages: emergency, recovery and rebirth. “They started simultaneously in each of their actions,” explained Terán.

The governor added that 20 towers will be rebuilt in the state, restoring 600 apartments. He also said that, in the short term, 3,041 people living in La Guaira will be able to return to their homes.

“What we want is to see how quickly they can remove the rubble to find our relatives, our friends, like all of us in La Guaira who we lost,” he declared.
