Ukraine carried out a drone attack against the Russian city of Novorossiysk in the early hours of Wednesday (9). The offensive left four people dead, including a child.
According to the city’s mayor Andriy Kravchenko, “drone debris” fell on industrial facilities and near a residential building.
The governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, reported that another 29 people were injured during the attack, three of whom are in serious condition.
“Last night, our armed forces repelled a massive attack by enemy drones in the region. Novorossiysk was the main target. Unfortunately, four people died, including a child. Another 29 people were also injured in the city last night, three of them in serious condition. They are all receiving medical attention. We are ready to transport them to our regional medical centers if necessary,” Kondratyev wrote on social media.
Additionally, the governor reported that an Orthodox church, a kindergarten, three private buildings and five apartment buildings were damaged during the dawn attacks.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defense systems destroyed 596 Ukrainian drones over 12 regions of Russia and the Black Sea.
According to the ministry’s statement, from 8 pm on September 8 to 8 am on September 9, Moscow time, aerial targets of the Ukrainian Air Force were shot down over the regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Orenburg, Rostov, Samara, Tula and Ulyanovsk. Attacks were also repelled over the Krasnodar Territory, the Republic of Crimea and the Black Sea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack on the Novorossiysk region, but did not comment on the deaths of civilians in the Russian city, highlighting only the military infrastructure as the target.
“We are responding to Russia’s daily attacks – effectively and across virtually the entire territory,” wrote Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“A base naval [em Novorossiysk] was hit: a terminal used for loading oil, military port facilities, warships and Kalibr aircraft carriers,” declared the Ukrainian leader.
Peace negotiations
The attack comes as the United States and Russia resume discussions on a possible resolution of the war. On Tuesday (8), Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump spoke by telephone about the negotiations conducted by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were in Moscow and Kiev in the previous days. According to the Kremlin, the two presidents evaluated the meetings positively.
After the meeting in Kiev, Witkoff stated that there had been “substantial progress” in talks with the Russians and Ukrainians. Moscow also signaled its willingness to continue negotiations with Washington. Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov stated that the American approach, based on what he called the “ground reality” of the war, favors the continuity of dialogue.
The negotiations, however, face resistance in Ukraine. Representative Anna Skorokhod said the conditions presented by US envoys to Kiev were “worse” than previous proposals and would include constitutional changes and recognition of territories. The parliamentarian said she received the information through unofficial channels. Despite the differences, Witkoff maintained that the negotiations made progress.
