Ross Ulbricht, creator of the website Silk Road, which sold drugs on the dark web, has been in prison for 11 years

Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, said he will free American Ross Ulbricht, who has been imprisoned for 11 years for founding a website that sold drugs. The statement was made during the Libertarian Party’s national convention on Saturday (May 25, 2024). The information is from the news agency AFP.

The Republican Party candidate for President of the United States participated in the Libertarian Party’s national convention, seeking support. In his speech, the former president said that he will appoint party members to his government.

“If you vote for me, on the 1st day I will switch the sentence of Ross Ulbricht”, he said. In legal language, commuting a sentence means replacing the current sentence with a milder one.

Ross Ulbricht is the creator of the website Silk Road, which specializes in online drug sales. Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison. He has been in prison since 2013. The platform was responsible for selling more than US$200 million in drugs to users around the world.

The site was anchored on the dark web. The operations allowed users to use false documents and pay in bitcoin. For libertarians, prison goes against free market principles.
