Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated this Monday (29) that, so far, Tehran has no plans to hold direct technical talks with United States authorities this week, in Doha, Qatar.

“Although consultations with Qatar — including monitoring the implementation of the other side’s commitments — are ongoing as usual, the report from some media outlets that technical working group talks will be held in Doha cannot be confirmed,” the foreign minister said.

“The first round of technical talks within the framework of the designated working groups will be held when the conditions are met and after an agreement on the date and venue. Consultations in this regard continue through intermediary countries,” he added.

The information about a meeting scheduled for Tuesday (30) was announced by the press and reiterated by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who posted on his Truth Social, in capital letters: “Iran requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha.”

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt also confirmed the meeting, in an interview with Fox News: “Special Envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will fly to Doha for high-level meetings this week as we continue to discuss the memorandum of understanding.”

According to her, “on the sidelines of these high-level negotiations, there will be technical conversations”.

Suspension of hostilities

The declarations of a possible meeting signal the resumption of diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, after the military escalation that began with bombings by Washington against the Iranian coast last Friday (26) and counterattacks by both parties until Sunday (28).

“Technical conversations should continue in all areas of the memorandum of understanding. Both sides will suspend hostile actions for the time being, and vessels will be able to transit freely,” a Trump administration official told the outlet Axiosnot Sunday (28).

I and Reuters reports that, according to the assessment of former US ambassador to Oman, Richard Schmierer, recent military exchanges between the US and Iran appear to have run their course. According to him, the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan contributed to the return to diplomacy.
