Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers to dissolve the Cortes Generales and call general elections for November 29th.
During his official speech, the president stated that “the time has therefore come for the Spanish people to decide what future they want for themselves and their country” “”, emphasizing that the measure meets the deadlines established by law.
Sánchez justified the anticipation of the elections by highlighting that “you only need to look at the horizon to realize that the world is heading towards a very complex era, of transformation, of transition”.
In previous days, Sánchez had considered calling early general elections due to the lack of parliamentary support for the approval of housing measures.
This occurred after the vote against by the right wing — which rejected the two royal decrees to contain real estate speculation and defend tenants —, delivered by the Popular Party, the far-right Vox party, the Catalan conservative party Junts and the Unión Popular Navarra.
Spain has seen marches and camps in several cities in recent days due to the housing crisis, mobilizations triggered by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her home in Madrid. The next general elections in the Iberian country are scheduled for 2027.
