Polish deputy Dominik Tarcyński, who supports Flavio Bolsonaro (PL) in the Brazilian elections, persecuted two Brazilian citizens who support the Workers’ Party (PT) who voted abroad during last Sunday’s elections (4).

In an image posted on social media, Brazilian women appear with PT brooches and making the “L” symbol with their hands, in reference to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The deputy used this image of Brazilian women to threaten to help deport them for “spreading communism”.

“Promoting communism in Poland is constitutionally prohibited! Get rid of communists in Brazil, just like we did in Poland. Vote for Flávio!”, wrote Tarcyński on social media.

The rhetoric adopted by Tarczyński finds an echo in a state policy developed in Poland after the end of socialism. The country promoted, especially from the 2010s onwards, a process of decommunization of public memory. A law passed in 2016 banned the names of streets, squares, public buildings and other structures that honored people, organizations or events associated with communism.

In another publication, the European deputy openly expressed support for candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) in the elections, even celebrating the results of the first round of voting, which ended with a 47.03% advantage for the Bolsonaro candidate against the 45.16% achieved by President Lula (PT).

Tarczyński’s role in the episode involving the Brazilian women and his sympathy for Bolsonarism are not isolated. The Polish deputy, member of the Law and Justice party (PiS) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament, is known for his nationalist positions and for his proximity to sectors of the European and American extreme right.

The speech used by Tarczyński is also related to a political brand that the deputy has built in recent years: “Be Like Poland” (“Be like Poland”, in Portuguese). The expression became one of his main political slogans and today gives the name to his own website, a campaign and even a line of products sold by the deputy. The idea is presented by Tarczyński as a defense of national sovereignty, strict migration policies, conservative values and greater rapprochement between Poland and the United States.

He has held a seat in the European Parliament since 2019 and is part of, among others, the institution’s delegation for relations with the United States.
