Spain, Ireland and Norway made official this Tuesday (28) the recognition of Palestine as a State. With the officialization, Palestine is now recognized by 145 countries of the 193 UN member states.

The Irish government was the first to officially recognize the Palestinian State, this morning, and announced the creation of an Irish Embassy in Ramallah, capital of the West Bank, and the appointment of an ambassador from the country to Palestine.

When making the recognition official, this Tuesday (28), the countries said they hoped that the measure would accelerate agreements for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The conflict has lasted almost eight months and has killed more than 36,000 people and left more than 1.4 million Palestinians homeless.

The decision is not adopted “against anyone, much less against Israel, a friendly people (…) with whom we want to have the best relationship possible”, he stated. The recognition of the Palestinian state reflects the “frontal, resounding rejection of Hamas, which is against the two-state solution,” he added.

The recognition of Palestine as a state, a step that may be announced by Slovenia soon, causes division within the EU. The list does not include most countries in Western Europe and North America, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
