This Friday (27), the South Korean parliament approved, by 192 to 151 votes, the impeachment of interim president Han Duck-soo, who is also the country’s prime minister. In his place, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok temporarily takes over.
The decision comes two weeks after the dismissal of President Yoon Sua Yeol was approved on December 14, after the president declared martial law on December 3.
Before the parliamentary session, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party, which holds a majority in Parliament, accused Han of “acting in furtherance of insurrection.”
The impeachment occurred after Duck-soo refused to appoint three judges to fill unfilled vacancies on the Constitutional Court.
After Friday’s decision, Han declared that he accepted the result “to avoid further chaos and uncertainty” and that he would await a decision from the Constitutional Court regarding the motion against impeachment, presented by the People Power Party, which governs the country.
