European country will host a meeting to propose a ceasefire in mid-June; members of the G7, Brics and EU, among others, were invited
Switzerland said this Thursday (May 2, 2024) that Russia is not among the 160 delegations invited to the mid-June round of discussions to negotiate peace in the Ukraine war.
The Swiss government, which will host the event, said it has always been open to the Russians being present, but that Moscow has repeatedly demonstrated that it has no interest in participating.
“Switzerland is convinced that Russia must be involved in this process”, said the Swiss government in a statement cited by the agency Reuters. “A peace process without Russia is not possible”, he added.
According to ReutersRussia considers that Switzerland is not a neutral actor because of the sanctions imposed on Moscow since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The meeting was announced by Switzerland in January, following the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Among the guests are members of the G7, G20, the BRICS, the EU (European Union), international organizations and religious representatives. The summit is scheduled for June 15-16 in the Lucerne region.
